CBSE Grade 1 Admission: Age, Syllabus and What to Expect

Class 1 Admission Age

Two age rules can apply, so it helps to know both.

For the 2026-27 academic year only, a state order dated 10 April 2026 allowed a relaxation of up to 60 days (news report). Such relaxations can change every year. If your child’s birthday falls in late May or early June, confirm with the admissions office which rule applies before you pay the form fee. The 6+ age also follows the National Education Policy 2020, which treats ages 3 to 8 as one Foundational Stage.

What Changes from Preschool to Class 1

Preschool at Ujjval World School (Nursery, K1 and K2) is play-based, built around Language, Numeracy and a Programme of Inquiry, along with arts, craft, music, dance and sports. Class 1 is the first year of Primary School, which covers Classes I to VIII for ages 6 to 13.

Class I ratio 2:32, then 1:34 from Class II

The biggest shift is rhythm. Your child will move between subjects, sit for longer stretches and begin early reading and writing. The two-teacher ratio in Class I helps make that transition gentler.

CBSE Class 1 Syllabus

The Class 1 syllabus is built on foundational skills: reading, writing, numbers and awareness of the world around the child. The core subjects are:

  •       English: the first language, focused on listening, speaking, reading and early writing
  •       Second language: Kannada or Hindi
  •       Mathematics: numbers, shapes and everyday problem solving
  •       EVS: understanding family, community and the environment

For 2026-27, NCERT introduced new Class 1 textbooks aligned with the national curriculum: Mridang for English, Sarangi for Hindi and Joyful Mathematics for Maths. Ujjval World School shares its own book list, holiday calendar, uniform details and timings on the Academics page once the seat is confirmed. A third language (Kannada, Hindi or French) is added later, from Class VI.

How to Apply for Class 1

The process has three rounds, all described on the Admission Steps page:

  •       Round I: fill in the form and pay the form fee on the admissions portal
  •       Round II: attend the school visit. Both parents should come, arrive 15 minutes early and keep phones away, as the campus has a no cell phone policy
  •       Round III: pay the fees within two days of the school’s selection call, or the admission is cancelled

Keep these documents ready: birth certificate, health certificate, Aadhaar card, passport-size photographs, and a caste or category certificate where applicable. If your child is moving from another school, you will also need the report card and Transfer Certificate (TC).

How to Get Your Child Ready

  •       Read together daily. Short picture-book sessions build listening and vocabulary.
  •       Count in real life. Stairs, fruit and toys make numbers familiar.
  •       Practise routine. A fixed sleep and wake time makes the school day easier.
  •       Build independence. Opening a lunch box, packing a bag and washing hands go a long way
